ONDER INVLOED PRESENTS ‘THE INFLUENCES’ IN GLASGOW

Dutch project invites musicians to cover their influences at The Glad Cafe

On Thursday 28th of November, Dutch project Onder Invloed is hosting a night called ‘The Influences’ at The Glad Cafe in Glasgow. Seven local musicians, including Alasdair Roberts, Duglas T. Stewart of BMX Bandits and Three Blind Wolves, will perform specials sets including covers of their most important influences.

Onder Invloed (‘under the influence’) is a project by Dutch music journalist Matthijs van der Ven and has been running since 2008. He examines the influences of his own favourite musicians, so visitors of his website will discover both these musicians and those who are being covered. During the last five years, Van der Ven filmed over a hundred musicians from all over the world covering their influences in sessions, wrote a book on 17 Dutch musicians and organized about 50 live events in The Netherlands. This will be the first international Onder Invloed event in its existence.

In 2009, Van der Ven flew to Scotland to film sessions with local musicians and got to know some local musicians pretty well. That visit resulted not only in a bunch of sessions and more visits in the following years, but also in him getting bands from Glasgow to fly to The Netherlands and to play Onder Invloed events, amongst others. This way, The Seventeenth Century, Three Blind Wolves, Ryan Joseph Burns, Doghouse Roses and The Starlets got to play at some of the best Dutch venues and they all received warm welcomes.

Van der Ven: “There’s something about Glasgow that hit home straight away. I knew three people in the city when I arrived the first time, but left knowing many more. I met very talented musicians, who put a lot of hard work in their music, and went to nice venues. Over the years, Glasgow has become an important part of the Onder Invloed project. I even wrote a part of my book there. It just seems right to organize an event in the city that feels like a second home town.”

At The Glad Cafe, seven acts will each perform two covers and one original song. Alasdair Roberts, Duglas T. Stewart (of BMX Bandits) and friends, Ryan Joseph Burns, Three Blind Wolves, Paul Tasker (of Doghouse Roses), A New International and Les Johnson And Me make a varied line up for ‘The Influences’. The concert will of course be filmed for onderinvloed.com. Tickets cost £ 5,- and are for sale at The Glad Cafe website: thegladcafe.co.uk.
