CYCLING charity the Glasgow Bike Station are hosting a gig to help raise funds for their bike swap programme that gets local underprivileged children on two wheels. Held at their shop in Finnieston on Friday 21st March, the event will feature modern folk group Lorraine McCauley & the Borderlands and eclectic outfit Colonel Mustard & the Dijon 5, who strongly encourage crowd participation.
The gig is part of front woman Lorraine McCauley’s Gigs in Great Places vision, which aims to raise awareness of environmental and social projects by holding music events in their premises. The gig at the Bike Station is the second in her series.
Lorraine says: "I want to celebrate great places like The Bike Station as their work improves our health and our environment while bringing people together. In the past I worked as a development officer for Community Resources Network Scotland, representing recycling and re-use organisations across the country, so I know many fantastic organisations with similar aims. I hope by putting on Gigs in these Great Places that it will highlight what they do and let them know how much we all appreciate their hard work."
The Bike Station is Glasgow’s largest bike recycling organisation, and sell a wide range of new and refurbished kids and adults bikes at affordable prices. They also host a range of weekly bike skill and training sessions, as well as a Fix Your Own Bike workshop.
All money raised by the Bike Station will go towards their Bike Swap programme, which aims to increase access to cycling for disadvantaged children by allowing them to trade in a bike they have outgrown for a new refurbished one. This promotes a positive relationship with cycling and its many health and environmental benefits from an early age, whilst minimising landfill.
Lorraine McCauley & The Borderlands are tipped as the next modern folk breakthrough act and Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5 launch their highly anticipated debut album in May. There will be a bar at the gig, as well as stalls and a raffle. Doors open at 8.00pm, and tickets can be bought for £10(£7 concession) at www.lorrainemccauley.com or in person at the Bike Station, 65 Haugh Rd, G3 8TX.
