UNESCO city of music, Eden festival, Sub Hub and more

Hey guys, welcome to this weeks news in and around Glasgow and Scotland. Well try to keep you updated with the goings on within this vibrant city every week but if theres something you want us to check out then let us know

First up, an ambitious project set up as part of Glasgows UNESCO city of music. Dear Green Sounds is a stunning book charting our fair citys love affair with live music. With contribution from the top venues themselves including Barrowland Ballroom, The RCH, The Old Scotia bar and the Sub Club(more on them later) and the legendary The Apollo its a comprehensive look at what makes Glasgow such a significant destination for live music. Edited by Kate Molleson and dreamt up by UNESCO director Svend Brown and with over 350 photographs, each chapter tells the story of a Glasgow musical institution. With further additions from Glasgow and Scotlands leading writers and journalists including Keith Bruce, Ewan McVicar and Vic Galloway its an exceptionally in depth all consuming project. The book not only charters the recent history of the iconic venues, but goes back as far as the 14th century to truly show that music is engrained upon us as a city. Search for Dear Green Sounds on the web and have a look, its a dizzying labour of love.

Next up is The Eden Festival. Set in the rolling hills of Raehill Meadows, close to Moffat in Dumfries and Galloway, its a cracking wee festival suitable for families and ravers alike. With the festival scene dominated by TITP and with the loss of my beloved Rockness, there is a demand for more kitsch, boutique if you will, events and this fits the bill with its fancy dress themed days throughout the weekend. Headlined by Grandmaster Flash and Ms Dynamite with able support from The Cat Empire, Gypsy Disco and Mungos HIFI amongst many others it blitzes together Hip Hop, RnB, Disco, Dancehall, Reggae and anything else into its 9 stages. Its a friendly hippy vibe and i love that kind of thing so ill be checking it out and you should too - its in Lonely Planets top 10 European festivals to go to. It runs from the 11th-14th June.

Finally, my favourite place in the city, The Sub Club has a new exciting little brother in The Sub Hub. Running for 4 weeks til the tail end of April just off Buchanan street on the 6th floor of the Argyll Arcade. It hosted Red Bulls recent weekend takeover and had Derrick Carter (!) in conversation and then spinning the decks at the Subby. With coffee from Dear Green and food from Devils Deli and Nowayback, its a must visit for all you fellow techno heads out there. It comprises talks, DJs, workshops, club nights and visual shows and is on for most of April. Ill be in attendance tomorrow afternoon so see ye down there.

Cheers for reading guys. Anything you want us to check out then hit us up and look out for this weeks gig newsletter dropping into your inbox soon. We are spoiled for choice in this city aint we!!
