THE BIG BEACH BALL 2012

THE BIG BEACH BALL 2012
EXCITING NEW FESTIVAL ANNOUNCEMENT FOR ABERDEEN

FIRST LINE-UP RELEASE ANNOUNCEMENT !

Featuring headline performances from Heatthrob (m_nus), Slam (Soma), Tiger & Woods (Editainment), plus more to unveiled soon! Alongside these international stars we line-up a list brimming full of Scottish bands and DJ talent.

The Big Beach Ball 2012 is the first edition of a new annual event taking place in and around the Aberdeen Beach Ballroom. On a picturesque coast of Scotland, once crowned the UK’s sunniest city by the Met Office, Aberdeen opens the summer season at one of our most iconic, historic and underused locations. Snuggled along the Promenade with sandy beaches as far as the eye can see, this one day festival presents a visual and audio feast for music lovers, fun seekers and hedonists alike. Staged in the iconic Beach Ballroom, revelers can soak in the stunning setting while drinking in the electric atmosphere that international artists, DJs and the cream of Scottish bands and party starters provide; alongside vintage clothing markets, craft stalls, food and drink on site supplied by local restaurateurs and chefs, boutique cocktails and bars will bring to the Beach Esplanade. With a total capacity of around 2,000 music fans, The Big Beach Ball utilizes The Beach Ballroom like never before.

One of our most exciting headliners to be announced is North Michigan born HEARTTHROB, currently one of the brightest stars at Richie Hawtin’s infamous m_nus label. Delivering a LIVE set, he is expected to please the most discerning of minimal and house lovers with his infectious energy, ear for a killer riff and ability to convey a sense of drama and humour through his sets. Now living in Berlin, he featured on the record breaking Contakt show through ’08 and ’09 and has become an integral part of the Minus label family and aesthetic. He’s a true steal for Aberdeen!

Joining Heartthrob are Scottish dance music legends SLAM. It doesn’t come much bigger than Slam, after 10 years curating and playing in their own arena “Slam Tent” at T In The Park, and appearing on BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix six times in between the UK’s biggest club nights and festival appearances all around the globe, we bring you SLAM, performing a highly sought after and rarely witnessed House Set. You know they’re good when they’ve had extreme praise from the likes of Daft Punk! Start praying, Slam are transmitting to the Big Beach Ball like you haven’t heard them sound in years!

The mysterious commotion causing disco twosome that are TIGER & WOODS add an exciting twist to the bill! Emerging as secretive characters hidden behind a leopard of a logo, they caught the worlds attention with their epic disco and funk-tinged edits which they like to call future boogie, and have long gone under enigmatic aliases to release what have already become iconic club classics. Audibly influenced by early Janet Jackson, Prince, and white labels in the 80s, the duos debut release “Wiki & Leaks” featuring raunchy lyrics was rather well-timed, and somewhat hilariously just before the big scandal. With iconic performances already achieved at career defining locations such as Sonar, The Warehouse Project and Rex Club on top of their USA and Australian tours last year, this is something Aberdeen simply must see!

Local indie heroes THE LITTLE KICKS are also on the bill. Arguably Aberdeen’s most loved four piece, they’ve shared the stage with the likes of The Vaccines, Foals, Maximo Park, Editors, The Kooks, Mystery Jets, The Sunshine Underground, Maccabees, Frightened Rabbit, Errors, The Twilight Sad and Broken Records to name a few...
Last November’s debut album, was raved about in NME with a 4/5 star review, that on top of sessions with XFM, BBC Radio Scotland and BBC 6 Music, brought the band national acclaim! Get ready for upbeat Indie Disco pop that makes people dance.

The award winning FRIDGE MAGNETS jump in too! Having just picked up “Best Electronic Act” at the Scottish Alternative Music Awards, get ready for their energetic performance, and sound which they compare to “a mash up of Calvin Harris and Deadmau5 with elements of Example and Faithless”.

Starring alongside we are delighted to announce Glasgow’s infamous visual audio pairing - BIGFOOT’S TEA PARTY, having taken Scotland by storm over the last three years, with regular outings at Sub Club and Snafu broken up with outdoor riverside parties, warehouse after hours, a RockNess debut beside Ivan Smagghe and countless basements, terraces, (even laundrettes), this collective dare to do the unexpected. Now boasting some of the best residents as well as some of the most inventive visual set ups in the country. Eyes and ears peeled…

Another exhilarating act joining us is the untouchable Electronic Carnival For Freaks – MINIVAL. With their untouchable credibility and passion for house music, they’ve brought some of the world’s biggest artists to Aberdeen for the first time. The finest and most unique party experience around!

Conceptual disco duo DEN HAAN whose releases have brought them critical acclaim and firm DJ support from the likes of Optimo and Mylo. These Glasgow boys build music with a rare craft which may sometimes seem to have a parodic quality, an in-built “cheese” factor. But that is resolutely not its intention. Den Haan are deadly serious in celebrating their musical influences. Its camp undoubtedly, but HIGH camp. An aesthetic hip enough to appreciate trashy genius, a roughly-shod throw-away production but simultaneously in awe of the craft and imagination that was employed to create it.

Finishing off the first line-up release come CHUNGO BUNGO the youthman reggae/dub team from Glasgow, with their high-energy, dubplate heavy sets, that span roots and culture, from 80’s digital dancehall to the freshest steppers stompers. The last year has taken them all over Scotland and further afield with dates in Berlin and upcoming appearances at Outlook Festival. These reggae, dub and dancehall party starters deliver a fresh summer sound to The Big Beach Ball!

This is unquestionably the first of its kind for the North East, giving the region an event it has craved for years, helping to revitalize Aberdeen Sea Front with cutting edge production and worldwide attention.

The Big Beach Ball certainly looks like a bright start to the summer for Aberdeen! The event opens its doors at 1pm on Bank Holiday Sunday 6th May 2012, with the event wrapping up at midnight, closing with after parties across town until the early hours.

THE BIG BEACH BALL takes place on Sunday 6th May with the site open from 12pm to 1am. The event will incorporate a mix of live and DJ entertainment, and features bars, food stalls and local wares.
