Manchester art-pop quartet The 1975 will release their new single “The City” on May 20th. It follows three acclaimed EPs, “Facedown”, “Sex” and “Music For Cars”, and will be released through Dirty Hit/Polydor.
The four-piece make outsider anthems where alt.rock explosions meet electro-pop grooves. Their year so far has been as memorable as their ambition is high. They recently embarked on a support slot across Europe with Two Door Cinema Club, played a clutch of triumphant shows at SXSW and had a Top 20 hit with “Chocolate”, the indelible future-pop art-rock centrepiece of their “Music For Cars” EP. This success has set up The 1975 as one of the year’s breakthrough bands. Their headline May tour is sold out, as are two shows at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire and Manchester’s The Ritz in September.
Whilst “Chocolate” has been the crossover hit of the year so far (it was on the Radio 1 A-list for 4 weeks, reached the top slot on Hypemachine and its video has had almost 2 million views on Youtube), new single “The City” – which singer Matthew Healy describes as “a love letter to the baffling cacophony that is teenage self-exploration” - will take the group to even more searing heights. Co-produced by Arctic Monkeys collaborator Mike Crossey, it was introduced to the world Zane Lowe’s Hottest Record. Its a perfect snapshot of the band’s shape-shifting appeal and their songs have had over 1.5 million plays on Soundcloud.
The 1975 are impossibly now. Though they formed as a punk band whilst still at school, there’s no straitjacket to their current sound, which veers between brooding art rock, crisp electronica, dancefloor R&B, helium hip-hop, shimmering balladry and 80s gloss pop. Their debut album, due for release later this year, is currently being recorded with Crossey. “Our record will be everything that we are. We’ve gone hell for leather,” says Healy. The band of the year are only just getting started.
