GLASGOW UNESCO CITY OF MUSIC TO STAGE SPECTACULAR UNDERWATER PARTY FAMILY FUN DAY

This September holiday weekend, Glasgow UNESCO City of Music will transform the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall into a sea-themed musical playground, as the venue throws open its doors for The Glasgow UNESCO City of Music Underwater Party Family Fun Day on Saturday 22nd September. Kids will be taken on a musical voyage of deep sea discovery with a fun-filled programme of entertainment and activities for all the family, which is completely free to attend.

Following on from the huge success of its first family fun day in 2011 – which attracted over 2,500 kids, parents and carers – Glasgow UNESCO City of Music will once again partner with arts organisations across Scotland to bring together some of the country’s finest musicians and music educators for the event. Performers include Children’s Classic Concerts’ irrepressible percussion duo Owen and Olly, plus musicians from the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, musicians from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Dr Octopus and the Wheels of Steel.

Families are encouraged to dress up seaside-style for their day out, with every corner of the Concert Hall playing host to musical fun for all ages. The Main Auditorium will become the seaside-themed setting (complete with beach balls and deck chairs) for The Underwater Party – a fun-filled family disco featuring Dr Octopus and the Wheels of Steel (aka DJ and poet Charlie Dark). Kids can join Dr Octopus on a poetical adventure deep beneath the sea, encountering a starfish who wants to be a star, a beatboxing blowfish, a clumsy octopus and a mermaid who cant swim along the way as he brings his acclaimed hip-hop and DJ show to Glasgow.

Children’s Classic Concerts’ hugely popular double-act Owen and Olly and musicians from the Royal Scottish National Orchestra will lead a hands-on percussion extravaganza, with world-class performances plus a chance for kids to compose their very own ocean music. Kids can also get up close to world class musicians at the Scottish Chamber Orchestra’s Meet the Musicians stand, and find out what it’s really like to be a musician. The Concert Hall will also feature a Deep Sea Tank with flying fish, sharks and atmospheric underwater sounds, a Dark Room full of sea fog and mysterious sounds, plus performances by steel drummers, a treasure hunt, face painting and crafts.

Svend Brown, Director of Glasgow UNESCO City of Music, said:
"The Underwater Party promises to be a fantastic day out - theres something for everyone from babies to Mums and Dads. We’re throwing open the doors of the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and inviting families to join us for a day of musical fun - the whole venue will be buzzing with entertainment and activities, which are all completely free, and families can drop in at any point during the day. At Glasgow UNESCO City of Music, we believe it’s important to provide opportunities for all the family to enjoy music together, and look forward to welcoming music fans of all ages to the Concert Hall for The Underwater Party.”

Glasgow UNESCO City of Music’s Underwater Party is free to attend. Children’s Classic Concerts with Owen and Olly and Dr Octopus and the Wheels of Steel are free but ticketed, and booking in advance is strongly advised as capacity is limited. Tickets are available from Glasgow’s Concert Halls box office, by calling 0141 353 8000 or online at www.glasgowconcerthalls.com/familyfun
