Tenement Trail (With a bit about SAMAs)

The Mods and the rockers unite for punk and blues. Indie guitar music is back and we are all about to get caught up!

Tenement Trail

The Tenement Trail is a new festival brought together by Tenement TV.

Arriving at the Art School to pick up my wristband I am greeted by many of the same faces who were in attendance at last nights SAMA awards and subsequent after party. Rough covers it, however I vow I am not drinking...

Crash Club come armed with their Acid House sounds from the 90s with a liking to Chemical Brothers, XTRMNTR era Primal Scream, Leftfield and Adamski. A couple of guest singers join the fray, a band of lookalikes and sound alikes, they get the festival started in the best possible way, with bass. They were also a good pick me up from the hangover and the first drink of the day is ordered.
In the Garage at the Scottish Alternative Music Awards, Roman Nose took the roof off the place, fitting the next act I see play a similar genre.

In the Art School, Baby Strange bring out the night owls and the dark punks early in the day. The band have been creating some hype around them for some time now due to the quick 70s punk esque songs they play. Highlights from the set include the singer calling the crowd forward before then singing Violate Me the young Mick Jones could have had any number of the crowd. Once they started playing their best known tune Pure Evil the moshpit had started, it was only 10 past 5. Bodies went flying everywhere.

I had been to see Baby Strange on Monday night when they played at Flat 0/1 with Blindfolds (Who had just supported Deap Vally in Tuts)
The Mods and the rockers unite for punk and blues. Indie guitar music is back and we are all about to get caught up!
Not since Kain, The Ronelles, Figure 5 and The Barfly et al were kicking about Glasgow have indie kids went this mental to guitar music.

Saint Max & The Fanatics unite the ska and punk elements. Think of Dexys, XTC, Pulp, The Smiths, The Clash, The Specials, Madness and anything else British rolled into one! Highlights includes indie pop genius song A Life Worth Living and a cover of the singers “Favourite Band” Boney M Rasputin. “if youre gonna dance then dance” is all Max needs to say before the girls rush to the front.

Later that night, Max and his band played a house party round the corner that I was at, a sure fire sign of a community spirit (dare I say Scene) appearing again. The DIY ethic is in full flow.

After here it was a trip to Broadcast to see Selective Service, we were pretty much the last people to get through the door. They have the days first sell out venue. Great response to their reggae rocking tunes. The Tenement Trail had all their bands go onstage on time, an amazing effort for a festival with so many bands. Later in Sleazys I find out Ian the singer of Selective Service was in his local Partick Thistle supporters club up until 5 minutes to stage time, he could have been the one to make the production not 100%...

Davey Horne brings his country tinged rock and roll to the party, the sounds are a perfect chillout to what has been a pretty rocking day out so far. His previous band The Ray Summers brought out the crowd dancing, the singer of the band was in the crowd, probably the drunkest man at the festival, congratulations to him though, hes just became a dad.

Carnivores are loud, their aggressive rock has a few hardcore fans enjoying. They play to a quiet audience even though one of the venues next door has closed its doors. Kassidy are playing the Art School and the manager is at the front fending off the crowds who want in, she struggles to get the door shut but finally manages.

The Holy Ghosts pack out broadcast after wining the Best Newcomer award the night before at the SAMAs. The awards title fitting as they blew the crowd away with some excellent Rock and Roll.

The festival overall was a massive success. The night before was buzzing and awarding the amazing talent that Scotland has on show at the moment. Todays festival showcases the talent from many different genres of up and coming bands. The vibe across the venues was a really good one, people partying, drinking and enjoying good time music.
