Primal Scream kicked off the night with a high-energy set that felt like a homecoming for Glasgows very own rock legends. Bobby Gillespie and the band

The receptionist at my gym assumed I was headed to the Hydro, as it was where she was heading - I was about to experience something entirely different, a band at the start of their career, I told her to keep an eye out for their next show. YESNOMAYBE?, a band so fresh we havent even hit the hype yet, but believe me, all the labels already know. Their debut show at Nice ?n? Sleazy, launching their album Train to Nowhere, was the perfect setting for what felt like a throwback to the early days of Phoenix, MGMT, and Passion Pit.
From the moment they hit the stage, YESNOMAYBE?s sound was polished and tight, as if this was their 100th show, not their first. There was no hint of debut nerves; they oozed confidence, with an intro that gave off heavy MGMT vibes before plunging into their unique, infectious energy.
The band is a duo, half Scotland, and half French, with a backing live band.
Nice n Sleazy is a venue synonymous with the start of many bands careers, and it was the perfect backdrop for YESNOMAYBE?s debut. Manager Scott Kirkwoods decision to bring the band here, to a venue thats been pivotal for so many, felt like a statement, a return to sweaty, intimate gigs where you can feel the pulse of a band on the rise. Its been a while since Sleazys stage felt this alive.
"Missing in Action" signalled the start of the faster numbers in the set, and for a moment, we could have sworn The Strokes had stepped on stage. The crowd was locked in, and it wasnt long before we had a room full of voices singing along. Favourite track of the night "Hard to say" there were many contenders, the band claiming "Bloody Madness" as their own favourite.
Then we had an encore! Yes, an encore for a half-hour set. And they deserved it.
As the band left the stage, the album was played via the PA, and people hung around to listen, it was a unique ending. Though good to hear the recorded output sounding as good as we had just witnessed on stage.
It was hard not to think back to the last song Id heard on the radio before heading to the gig "Henrietta" by The Fratellis. I remember putting on their first-ever show and watching that band soar.
Could YESNOMAYBE? follow the same trajectory? After last nights performance, I wouldnt be surprised if theyre well on their way.
Look out for the debut album "Train to Nowhere" coming soon.
