The OVO Hydro was buzzing with anticipation on Saturday night as Pulp took to the stage for their first Glasgow show in over two decades. Backed by
Read MoreWhat felt like the warm-up trail for the massive Oasis summer shows, Festivals, and gigs all over this great city, Ocean Colour Scene rolled into Glasgow?s O2 Academy this week - with support from none other than Kula Shaker. A double-dose of 90s psychedelia, it felt more like a time machine than a gig.
Fronted by the eccentric, endlessly energetic Cristian Mills, Kula Shaker kicked things off with Tattva, Hey Dude, and Hush, wrapped in a hypnotic psychedelic light show that brought back memories of T in the Park in its golden years. A proper throwback to when fields were muddy, you were with your mates, and you sang along to everything.
Govinda provided a moment of transcendence. We went from Scotlands biggest festival fields to what felt like an acid trip in Woodstock 69.
Then came OCS - they launched into The Circle, we were off! What a tune. The first song of the band I fell in love with.
From there, it was an onslaught of classics. Youve Got It Bad had the crowd in full voice. The chant of OCS! OCS! rang out, before Get Up and Dance took over and with it the instruction: "Get up and smile. Get up and drink."
We obliged.
Then came the dedication to the city, to the river, to the roots of Glasgow. Psychedelic swirls turning into Clyde steamships, with Go to Sea being played.
Set highlights? Too many. So Low was a spine-tingler - always my favourite. Profit in Peace came with a sting the lunatics have taken over the asylum, never felt more relevant in todays world of continued wars.
The middle section slowed right down ? maybe a needed breather after a few fights in the crowd and scuffles at the doors. Still, when they hit their stride again, the place erupted.
The closing run was relentless: Get Blown Away, and a fully modded-out The Riverboat Song. Hundred Mile High City and The Day We Caught the Train took things to the finish line, the band soaking in the massive ovation. The crowd? Buzzing.
