Mumford & Sons - OVO Hydro 02/12/2025

Mumford & Sons delivered their magical trademark upbeat rock formula

Looking around as we entered the gig, the eclectic nature of the audience was very apparent—a sure reflection of how diverse the fusion of music was to come. The show kicked-off with Run Together, setting the scene with multiple instruments coming beautifully together.

Front-man Marcus Mumford then announced "its good to be back in Scotland" as they played Babel, which set the crowd in the mood to rock and dance. Introducing early hit, Rubber Band Man, the band said that they were "sorry it took so long to be back"; understandable considering the crowds besotted reaction thus far: the sheer aural delight arising from the rush of rhythmic acoustic guitar , banjo, piano and double bass had the audience in its thrall.

Following on, Little Lion Man provided a raucous, jumping-up-and-down singalong for the gamut of ages in the crowd.

The Mumfords indicated they were looking forward to doing a UK tour for a long time because it meant (what else!) that they got to come to Scotland! Next, they played Here, with special guest Sierra Ferrel - an American country musician - and what a remarkable addition to the song she proved to be.

As the band moved on to the B stage, they played two gorgeous acoustic songs - Guiding Light and Caroline. These had the audience hypnotised with emotions: love, nostalgia and happiness.

The show continued with their magical trademark upbeat rock formula. "We will keep coming back as long as you keep having us back", Mumford promised the audience. The lights and the fireworks were mesmerising as the audience danced and enjoyed the beautiful main set finale, The Wolf.

What a way to start the encore, with Timshel! Just as they began to sing however, one member of the audience interjected with a rendition of Flower of Scotland. Literally the whole of the crowd followed suit and sang along. The band described this as a "treat" but after a while jokingly told the crowd to now "shut the f*ck up!" At which point the audience duly obliged and listened intently to the gentle acoustic ditty.

Mumford then invited the audience to sing along since he concluded "youre so great at singing" but - giving with one hand but taking away with the other - accused the audience of being "sh*t at clapping"! The crowd didnt care, they were just in love with the moment as they played Awake My Soul - a spiritually awakening song, focusing on self-discovery, vulnerability, and the importance of love and commitment. A beauty. And, speaking of which, what a beauty it was too to end the show with Conversations With My Son - their newest single released in October 2025 - which ended the show with a calm and almost surreal atmosphere.

Good to have you back in Scotland, Mumford & Sons - and heres to your coming back for years to come, with happy alternative folk to sing and stomp along to!
